MIME Definition:
MIME is the acronym or short form of Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. It is basically a content type on the internet in which the data contained in an internet message can be clearly classified as it would in an email or in an HTTP message.
We can also say, to simplify the meaning, MIME is an Internet Standard. It extends the format of email message messages to support text in character sets other than the American Standard Code for Information Interchange or ASCII. MIME also facilitates attachments of audio, video, images, and application programs.
How Does It Work?
It should be mentioned here that the MIME is an extension of the original Simple Mail Transport Protocol or SMTP in technical terminology that facilitates or allows the users to exchange various types of data files. Such files may be audio, video, visuals, and application programs.
The messages or matters with MIME formatting can be sent with a number of systems including SMTP, POP (Post Office Protocol), and IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol). MIME is a useful system with high technological sophistication.
Being a versatile system or method, MIME permits your mail Web browser to send and receive written text, audio, video, and graphics files via Internet mail. Attachments under the MIME are faster and versatile.
How can you attach heavy files using MIME?
The large files or heavy email attachments, under MIME, can be compressed for better transmission with WinZip or StuffIt. The photographs can be sent in the JPEG format which requires less space and uploading is also faster.
MIME protocol has several useful features which, among others, include multiple attachments in a single email, supports multiple languages (i.e. Indian languages, German, English, French, and Spanish, etc..), supports multiple attachments in a single email, and the non-ASCII characters.
In Conclusion:
One of the biggest benefits of MIME is that it provides the facility of connecting HTML and CSS to email, due to which people can design email as per their requirement and make it attractive and beautiful.
