Since the pandemic is still raging on, this year, the holidays won’t be the same. While we won’t be able to gather around a Christmas tree and hug and kiss each friend and family member when the clock strikes midnight or as a thank you for a present, we will, however, still be able to celebrate the holidays but in a slightly different way.

Yes, this year the holidays will be different but that’s not the reason not to get into the holiday spirit or to skip celebrations! If you were wondering how this year’s holidays are supposed to look like, don’t worry, we have the answer you were looking for.
Check out some of the ways to embrace the holidays during the pandemic.
Ways to embrace the holidays during the pandemic
Invite fewer guests
This year, the less is more. This means that your long list of guests will need to be downsized. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t invite all of your friends and family – just not at once.
For example, organize various bashes or find different ways to celebrate. For Thanksgiving invite one side of the family and for Christmas the other. For a small group of friends organize a Christmas decorating party or something similar.
And, of course, don’t forget to safely attend all holiday gatherings – no kissing and hugging, wash hands often, wear masks, be at a 6 feet distance always, and so on.
Find a way to spend holidays with all the people you love, but don’t gather them all at the same time. Of course, if you don’t want to risk it, then just downsize your guest list.
Online gatherings on holidays
In case, there is no way that you can travel or that your friends and family can come to you for holidays – don’t panic, there is still a way that you all can be together for holidays.
Just like we did it back in March and April for the Easter holidays, gather all your loved ones online. You can all be together virtually. You can eat together, watch movies together, keep old traditions and simply spend time together but online.
You don’t have to spend your holidays alone, now that you can ‘see and be’ with everyone virtually.
Exchanging holidays cards and gifts
Do you remember how before we used to send Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas cards to all people dear to us? Why not reinstate that tradition? Since we probably won’t be seeing many of the family members and friends – why not make their holidays special by sending them nice holiday cards and spreading some holiday cheer?

Similarly, we can also send Christmas gifts as well. If you need Christmas gift ideas – don’t worry there are plenty. However, this year try to think practical more than expensive. It’s been a tough year, so people will be happy with a practical gift that they will actually use.
So, if you’re not in the position to see all your friends and family this year, make sure you brighten up their holidays by sending them a card or a gift!
Create new traditions for holidays
If this year’s holiday season is going to be drastically different for you and your family, find a way to start new traditions. Maybe this year you won’t be organizing a big Thanksgiving dinner or going somewhere for Christmas, or maybe there won’t be a huge New Years’ Eve celebration – it doesn’t matter, you can create new traditions.
Instead of making a huge Thanksgiving dinner with a big turkey and all, make something smaller more appropriate for you and the members of your household. Similarly, instead of going somewhere for Christmas, spend the day watching movies and being with those closest to you.
Change old traditions or find a way to accommodate new ones.
Do all the cooking and baking but downsize
If, for you, the epitome of the holiday season is baking and cooking, don’t give it up so easily. You can still bake and cook everything you like but just make sure it’s the smaller amounts. This year, you probably won’t have so many guests so there is no need to cook so much food or bake so many cookies.
Additionally, it’s ok if this year’s menu is different from what everyone is used to. Instead of traditional Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners, you can make something more unconventional and budget-friendly.
No one will blame you, in the end, it’s been a financially difficult year, so it’s understandable that you have to make some changes.
Don’t skip all the decorating
Many people have already started putting up their Christmas trees – because they say they need a bit of holiday cheer. Just because holidays may be different this year, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t decorate your home for the holidays.
You can either stick to the traditions and whip out the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving or you can already put it up as many have already done it. Decorate both the inside and the outside of your house just like you usually would.
The best way to get into the holiday spirit is by decorating. If you don’t have enough ornaments and décor pieces, order them online or DIY some on your own.
Volunteer virtually for holidays
Holidays are a perfect reason and occasion to give back to the community. It’s the time when everyone deserves some attention. If you’ve already been a volunteer before the pandemic started, you know how this worked in-person. Now, unfortunately, things are a bit different just like with most things in our lives.
However, if you’re willing to volunteer this holiday season, you still can. Maybe not in the traditional way, but there are still many virtual volunteering opportunities. Find a good way to brighten up someone’s holiday season, especially this year!
Conclusion:
Don’t cancel the holidays because they are still on! No matter what we’re all going through right now, we all need a bit of a holiday spirit and energy. This holiday season may not be what we’re all used to but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t celebrate.
It’s been a tough year, and we all need some positive energy and what better way to restore it than celebrating holidays.
